EG&G Division and Lear Siegler Services
Even the most capable soldier is unable to complete his mission without the proper equipment. URS, through its EG&G Division and Lear Siegler Services, Inc. (LSI), has supported U.S. military tracked and wheeled vehicles for over half a century. URS provides full life-cycle services including system development and engineering, deployment of equipment, supply chain management, and maintenance, repair, and RESET of vehicles.
Changing threats to land forces require new solutions – URS has the technical and engineering expertise to evaluate warfighter needs and deliver solutions that meet requirements. In 2006, facing a critical need to protect U.S. troops from land mines, small arms fire, and improvised explosive devices, the Department of Defense (DoD) began the development of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. On behalf of the DoD, URS worked with manufacturers to support production, integration, testing, and deployment of MRAPs to meet the stringent technical requirements necessary to protect U.S. service members. Within the year, about 1,200 vehicles had been fielded and over 14,000 have been delivered to date. In recognition of MRAP program accomplishments, URS and our government and commercial teammates were awarded the 2008 David Packard Excellence in Acquisition Award.
Beyond system development, URS logisticians know how to maintain a complex, worldwide supply chain – ensuring vehicles have the spare parts they need to remain operational. At the Defense Distribution Depot Barstow, CA, URS was responsible for the receipt, storage, issue, packing, and transportation of over 79,000 National Stock Items. The quality control imposed by URS’ ISO 9001:2000 registered systems resulted in 99.99% of shipped items to be defect free. URS routinely received praise from end users and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) supporting urgent requirements.
Working alongside deployed U.S. military forces, URS has over 1,200 mechanics at 16 sites providing critical vehicle maintenance and repairs. URS restores battle and desert worn HMMWVs to excellent working condition. In Kuwait at URS’ Light Tactical Vehicle Theatre Provided Equipment Refurbishment (LTV-TPER) facility, each HMMWV received is rebuilt and returned to active service within 10 days – more than 1,200 HMMWVs have been rebuilt to date. By exceeding government and industry standards through this aggressive tempo, URS is returning vehicles to the field faster than any other company.
At home, URS works with the Red River Army Depot (RRAD) to perform vehicle recapitalization, RESET, and depot level maintenance on both wheeled and tracked vehicles. Maintaining an aggressive repair rate of 32 vehicles produced per day, URS has delivered over 10,000 HWMMVs. This pace is achieved through the use of processes such as Lean Six Sigma which was utilized to reduce hub rebuild time from 180 minutes to just 30 minutes. At RRAD and our international maintenance facilities, each vehicle undergoes thorough quality assurance inspection to ensure that they are returned to the warfighter in top condition, ready to support mission success.
